How to Build a Daily Prayer Habit That Actually Sticks
Prayer is the foundation of the spiritual life. But for most of us, it’s also the first thing that slips when life gets busy. Here’s how to change that.
Start Small — Really Small
The biggest mistake people make is trying to go from zero to an hour of prayer overnight. Start with five minutes. Set a specific time — right after your morning coffee, during your commute, or before bed. Consistency matters more than duration.
Anchor It to Something You Already Do
Habit researchers call this “habit stacking.” Attach your prayer time to an existing routine: after brushing your teeth, before opening your laptop, right when you sit down for lunch. The existing habit becomes your trigger.
Use the Church’s Built-In Structure
The Liturgy of the Hours, the daily readings, the Rosary — the Church has given us frameworks for prayer that have worked for centuries. You don’t have to improvise. Grace can walk you through any of these traditions, explaining each step as you go.
Don’t Aim for Perfection
Your mind will wander. You’ll miss days. That’s normal — even the saints struggled with distraction in prayer. St. Therese of Lisieux said, “For me, prayer is a surge of the heart.” It doesn’t have to be polished. It has to be real.
Track Your Progress
Not in a legalistic way, but in a way that helps you see momentum. A simple check mark on your calendar, a note in your journal, or a conversation with Grace about how your prayer life is going. Visibility creates accountability.
The goal isn’t to become a prayer warrior overnight. It’s to show up, again and again, until talking to God becomes as natural as breathing.
